Join Albie Bell, Vice President of the Vergers Guild of the Episcopal Church, for an engaging exploration of one of the Church’s most quietly powerful ministries.
 
What exactly is a verger? The answer may surprise you.
 
This workshop traces the rich history of the verger, from its roots in medieval England to its vital presence in today’s Episcopal parishes. Along the way, we will explore how the role has evolved, what it looks like in modern congregations, and why it remains essential to the life, order, and beauty of our worship.
 
Most importantly, this session will lift up and empower those who are already serving in verger-like ways without carrying the title. If you coordinate worship, prepare sacred spaces, escort processions, solve last-minute liturgical puzzles, support clergy behind the scenes, or help ensure that “all things are done decently and in order,” you may already be living this ministry.
 
Through storytelling, practical examples, and shared conversation, participants will gain clarity about the vocation of the verger and leave encouraged, affirmed, and equipped to embrace or deepen this ministry in their own parish contexts.
