The Rev. Heather Barta, Coordinator of Province V, will be presenting at the "It's all about love" festival in July 2023. This page will host the resources that she shares during her workshop.
Preparing Leaders for Evangelism
Monday, July 10, 10:45 am - 12 noon
1. 3x5 card game
The basic game should be quick and fun.
Everyone writes a question on a card (something general).
Introduce yourself to another, ask and answer the questions, switch cards, and move on to the next person.
(Advanced play: can be played with the evangelism cards)
2. Compass Activity
"You are in a group and you're given a task... How do you respond? Pick one of 4 options."
This activity is great for any group. It's perfect for Vestries and committees and can be used every time the membership changes.
Download the materials here.
3. Relational Systems
What does your system look like?
Use this activity to reflect on your church's system.
4. Conflict
Addressing and processing conflict is the single best thing that you can do to build trust, learn each other's values, and create a loving community. Learn to love conflict! (Or at least appreciate the communal benefits of good conflict management.)
Heather recorded a video about the basics of Conflict Management. You can view it here.
Handout #3 (so you don't have to download to participate)

Family Systems Theory: The Congregation as a System
Handout 1
Draw a "picture" of your church system.
- Include ministry groups like vestry, altar guild, choir, and staff.
- Be sure to include yourself in the picture.
- Show how the ministry groups relate to each other:
- What are the connections? *
- Are they in close communication or distant?
- Are they conflicted?
- Do their ministries overlap and how?
- Who is their liaison? Contact person? Communicator?
- Does the former clergy person appear in the picture? Where?
- What groups might be unique to your particular church system?
- Have you included the church staff and its connections to groups?
- Are there groups on the outside of the church system that influence the function of your congregation?
- What is your relationship to these groups?

Heather’s additional questions:
- Examine the relational lines (*). Who connects well? Who is in conflict? How is it resolved? Where is love expressed?
- Where could clear and direct communication improve relationships?
- Try to see the picture from a distance – naming the roles and not the individual people that you know. Compare this to the historical relationships of those roles.
